It is challenging to provide individual instruction to students when the entire classroom is packed full. Now, add the element of a wide-range of subject mastery and the situation becomes more complex. Students enter Northland High School with subject knowledge at numerous grade levels. For example, a freshman English class may have students reading at the fifth grade level trying to learn the same material as a student at a college reading level. Teachers found themselves struggling to give the individual help and support that was desperately needed for students. That is, until a change was implemented that helped Northland transition their classrooms into better learning environments for students at all skill levels.
